Having a garden can be a rewarding endeavor when successful. There are many types of gardens that you can have and some that require more care than others. The keys to a successful harvest at the end of the season rely on some main factors such as, location, protection, planning, planting, and care you give as it grows.

First step to a successful garden is deciding what you want to grow whether it be fruits, flowers, or veggies. It's important to keep in mind that the average last frost risk in the North Jersey area falls around April 24th. Because of this late frost risk a lot of your seeds may need to be started inside then transferred as seedlings to your garden. You'll want to do research on what does best in our area and the specific directions for that plant. There are some great websites out there that will tell you exactly when to start, when to transfer, and when to harvest.

Before planting your garden, you need to choose a location that is best for the plants that you have in mind and how large you'd like your garden to be. Consider factors like amount of sunlight the area gets, and whether or not that area tends to get too wet when it rains. If you choose an area that holds a lot of water, you may want to consider planting in raised garden beds so that you have more control over how much water your plants receive.

Type and location are important factors when having a garden but why put in all this work just to lose it all to the local hungry critters. Our area is full of wildlife that will love your garden more than you. These critters include mice, rabbits, racoons, deer, and bears. The best way to ensure that you reap the rewards of your garden is to protect it. Consider having a fence installed to surround your garden ensuring that you get the most out of your garden by keeping out those furry thieves.

Once you have your garden area prepped and protected, have your seeds or seedlings ready to go, you can plant and watch them grow. It's always best to do your research on your plants and follow all their recommended care and harvest time. This can include recommended spacing, watering, maybe adding compost or fertilizer to make sure they are healthy and strong. Gardens can be so rewarding and with rising grocery prices it can be a great way to feed your family at a fraction of the cost for years to come.
